Jack Sheppard - Beta had to once again settle for second place for the second day in a row, as his arch rival Pol Tarres got the better of him at the Italian Grand Prix held at Foppolo. As is becoming the theme in more recent weeks, round seven of the 2010 SPEA FIM Trial World Championship again proved to be a very easy affair with Sheppard only losing marks in three of the thirty sections.
Minor adjustments were made to a few of the sections after Saturday's equally low scoring European event, but in reality these changes had hardly any affect at all. Jack's first and heaviest loss of the day was in section five on the first lap where he parted with three marks, which come the finish equated to over half of his total loss for the day.
Another dab in the sixth hazard brought to a close Sheppard's losses for the entire lap, his mid point tally of just four marks put him down in fourth place and with work to do on the second lap if he was to climb the leader board. Tarres was faultless over the first fifteen sections, with two Italian riders splitting Pol and Sheppard at this stage.
Knowing that the victory was slipping from his reach, and along with it the Youth title, Jack dug deep on his final lap and did not drop a mark until section eleven. Although this was not sufficient to catch Tarres, who again went clean on his second lap, Sheppard's single dab ride for the lap was enough to pull him up into second place.
With Tarres having now recorded six wins, the title is his, this being decided on the best nine counting days out of eleven in total. Whilst Sheppard now has to resign himself to the fact that the championship is now a bridge too far, he holds a solid second place in the general standings and should finish as vice champion barring an absolute disaster at the final round in the Czech Republic.
"I am disappointed, as my goal was to win the championship. It's a real shame that the trials that have ultimately decided the title have been so easy. Tarres has ridden well for sure and I want to congratulate him on winning the title as he has been a tough rival all year. On the other hand it would have been nice to have had some tougher events, where one mistake doesn't mean that your day is over." stated Jack.
"It looks like I can be second in the World championship and I still have a chance of winning the European title, so I suppose I shouldn't be too disappointed with this being my first full season at international level. After this run of trials I am now looking forward to returning home and riding in the British championship next weekend." concluded Sheppard.
Jack will return to the UK, ready for next Sunday's British Championship Trial in North Yorkshire, where he currently lies second in class.
